Geothermal Beauty: The Salt That's Different From Every Other Salt

Not all salt is created equal. The salt in ANGAN products comes from one of the most remote and pristine corners of Iceland — and it's made in a way that exists nowhere else on earth.

When we talk about our geothermal sea salt, we're talking about Saltverk — Iceland's only salt producer, operating from the Westfjords peninsula using 100% geothermal energy. Zero emissions. Mineral-rich. Microplastic-free. And the story behind it is one of our favourites to tell.

What Is Saltverk?

Saltverk was founded in the Westfjords — one of Iceland's most remote and untouched regions, where the ocean is clean, the air is clear, and geothermal hot springs bubble up from the earth. The process is elegantly simple: seawater is drawn from the fjord and evaporated using heat from geothermal springs, leaving behind pure, mineral-rich salt flakes.

No fossil fuels. No chemical processing. No additives. Just seawater and geothermal energy — a process that has been used in Iceland for centuries, now refined into one of the world's most sustainable food-grade salts.

Why This Salt Is Different

Most commercial salt — even "sea salt" — is heavily processed, stripped of trace minerals, and often contaminated with microplastics from ocean pollution. Saltverk's salt is different in three important ways:

  • Mineral-rich — the slow geothermal evaporation process preserves naturally occurring magnesium, potassium, and calcium that are lost in industrial salt production
  • Microplastic-free — sourced from the clean waters of the Westfjords, far from industrial shipping lanes and coastal pollution
  • Zero-emission production — 100% geothermal energy means no carbon footprint in the production process

ANGAN's Upcycled Approach

Here's where it gets even more interesting. ANGAN uses the mineral-rich by-product from Saltverk's salt production process — the concentrated mineral residue that remains after the salt crystals are harvested. This material is exceptionally rich in trace minerals and would otherwise go unused.

By incorporating this upcycled by-product into our formulations, we're reducing waste and capturing the full mineral value of the geothermal process. It's a genuinely circular approach — and it means our products contain minerals that aren't available anywhere else.

What These Minerals Do for Your Skin

The mineral profile of geothermal sea salt has real, measurable benefits for skin:

  • Magnesium — reduces inflammation, supports skin barrier function, and has been shown to improve skin hydration. Many people are deficient in magnesium, and transdermal absorption through bathing is an effective way to supplement
  • Potassium — helps regulate moisture balance in skin cells, preventing the dehydration that leads to dullness and fine lines
  • Calcium — supports cell renewal and the skin's natural exfoliation process
  • Trace minerals — the complex mix of trace elements in geothermal water has been used in Icelandic bathing traditions for centuries to soothe skin conditions and support overall skin health

The Westfjords Connection

The Westfjords are one of Iceland's best-kept secrets — a dramatic peninsula of deep fjords, towering cliffs, and near-total wilderness. It's a place where the land feels ancient and untouched. The salt that comes from here carries that quality: pure, unhurried, made by the earth itself.

When you use our Icelandic Moss Salt Scrub or our Bath Salt, you're bringing a piece of that landscape into your bathroom. That matters to us — and we think it will matter to you too.
